Members attended an interesting tour of Guilding and Woods Pipe Organ Builders

Members of the ASM Indianapolis Chapter toured pipe organ maker Goulding and Wood, Inc. in November. Jason Overall gave us a broad overview of the mechanics of pipe organs followed by a tour of their facility. Though not a large facility, the tour allowed attendees to get a close-up look at the intricate woodworking, large pipes, and amazing "voicing" room, where pipes are tuned.

The ASM Board of Trustees recently announced the election of Frank Mermanek to be a Fellow of the Society.

Indianapolis Chapter Member Frank Mermanek made an ASM Fellow!

The ASM Board of Trustees recently announced the election of Frank Mermanek to be a Fellow of the Society.

The honor represents recognition of his distinguished contributions in the field of material science and engineering, citing specifically "for long term activities in thermal spray, in particular the conceptualization and nurturing of the Thermal Spray Glossary and the creation of the "Thermal Spray Hall of Fame".

The honor will be officially conferred at the October 17 Awards Banquet as part of Material Science and Technology '06, held in Cincinnati Oct 15 - 19, 2006.

Congratulations Frank!

Chairman Steve Maus, and Historian Tom Tsareff both get in the act as Dr. Uwe Hansen delivers an excellent talk (December 19, 2005) to the Indianapolis Chapter about how science can be applied to Caribbean Steel Pan Instruments to understand and improve the overtones of the music they produce.
Top: Uwe and Steve demonstrate nodes and the harmonics of a "one dimensional" instruments using a steel spring.
Center: Tom demonstrates overtones produced by a simple wind column (another one dimensioal instrument).
Bottom: Uwe demonstrates the "two dimensional" steel pan, and the complexity of its overtones.

November 15th Plant Tour of Steel Dynamics draws 40 members.

Fourty members of the Chapter attended the tour of the Steel Dynamics Bar Products Mill in Pittsboro. While the 115 ton ELectric Arc Furnace and 3 stand continuous caster were not available for the tour; we were able to see five stations of the Pomini Rolling Mills in action making 7" round-corner bar. The degree of automation and monitoring of the operation were very impressive. The very large walking beam re-heat furnace and cooling stations be also very interesting to watch.

Indianapolis Chapter had great time on tour at McKenzie Career Center!

November 14, 2003
Pictured: Dave Riegle (Asst. Site Director, Ball State U.); Heng Huang (Vice Chair, ASM-Indianapolis Chap.); Tony Rothsberg; Ann Bolcavage (Past Chair, ASM-Indianapolis Chap.); Ed Wyatt (Welding and Forge Instructor, McKinzie Career Center); Rhonda Williamson (ASM National Lab. Manager); R.L. Alan Jordan (Purdue U.); George Meng (Chair, ASM-Indianapolis Chap.); Steve Maus (Treasurer, ASM-Indianapolis Chap.); Mitch Spencer (Exec. Comm. ASM-Indianapolis Chap.); Rick Zordan (McKenzie Career Center)

Thirty five ASM Chapter members attended a special program and tour of the McKenzie Career Center on the east side of Indianapolis November 17.

The program featured three speakers.

Ed Wyatt of McKenzie described the welding training of High School Students at McKenzie which has a high success rate of graduates passing the QC-7 AWS test. McKenzie also offers what it claims to be the only high school forge and blacksmithing program in the United States. This program is approved by the ABANA (Artist Blacksmithing Association of North America). Ronda Williamson (ASM International) spoke about the ASM National Laboratory and opportunities for the students in attendance. Prof. R.L. Alan Jordan of Purdue University spoke about opportunities for vocational study at Purdue and a cooperaterative program a Ball State University offering Purdue credit.

Members learned that in the area of welding, the McKenzie program includes:
  • Welding Safety
  • Welding Blueprint & Symbol Reading
  • Math for Welders
  • Oxyacetylene Welding and Cutting
  • Shielded Metal Welding (Up and down hill)
  • Semi-automatic gas shielded arc Welding (Up and down hill)
  • TIG welding
  • Weldability of Ferrous and Nonferrous Alloys
Principal (and tour guide) Barry Norman [pictured right] stunned ASM members by the extent of the McKinzie facility which has fully functioning laboratories in Cullinary Arts, Cosmetology, Auto Collision Repair, Welding, Forge and Blacksmithing, Automotive mechanics, Computer Repair, Computer Networking, Engineering Technology, Construction & Building (home building), and Media Arts (audio, Television, print, etc.).

McKenzie Career center is always seeking partners in the material sector to supply needed equipment and supplies. Several of the ASM members expressed a great interest in the career center and its programs.

Avon High School Teacher Gary Ayers
won a 'Teacher Grant' from the ASM International Foundation

The winning entry was as follows:
Composite Materials for Vehicle Construction
Avon High School is involved in an ongoing research and development project dealing with solar/electric powered vehicles. For the past two years, the science and technology students have researched, designed, developed, testing and raced solar/electric powered vehicles in the national Solar Bike Race. The grant will be used towards a research in building a unique vehicle chassis/body for a solar vehicle project using composite materials (i.e., carbon fiber, Kevlar, fiberglass, etc.) in order to lighten the weight and increase the efficiency.

Congratulations Mr. Ayers ! - We look forward to seeing the racer!
